Introducing CIMSPA Coaching Professional Standards
The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and UK Coaching have released the first sector professional standards related to sports coaching.
The new CIMSPA Coach and Coaching Assistant Professional Standards have been developed by employers, supported by CIMSPA, UK Coaching and national organisations such as the Association for Physical Education Youth Sport Trust and ukactiveKIDS, who together make up the sector’s Community Sport Professional Development Committee.
Our shared goal for coaching professional standards is a learning and development environment for coaches that offers flexible pathways to demonstrate their abilities – aspiring coaches will be able to learn when and where suits them best, with an emphasis on assessment based on real-world coaching environments.
The new standards provide an agreed reference point as to the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of coaching assistants and coaches, and will inform the development of future coaching qualifications and training.
UK Coaching are the lead agency for coaching. CIMSPA is working in partnership with UK Coaching to ensure national governing bodies of sport can harness the power of a single, widely agreed standards framework.
Three specialism standards are also relevant to the coaching world:
- Working in the School Environment (out of curriculum)
- Working with Children
- Safeguarding and Protecting Children
Summary versions of all of these professional standards are available in our Standards Library:
